Grisedale Hause (pass)

This is a fantastic route and up until the end of 2011, one I've yet to walk all in one go. Grisedale is beautiful valley which always seems much longer than is actually is. Then, as you leave the pastures behind and approach the middle section of the route around Grisedale Tarn and Grisedale Hause, you find yourself in what is a truly mountainous setting found in the very heart of the higher eastern fells. The descent from Grisedale Hause to the Vale of Grasmere begins on rough ground but soon gives way to easy walking down the side of Great Tongue where you soon find yourself walking through countryside equally as beautiful as that of Grisedale.

H. R. Jenkinson describes this route in his "Practical guide to the English Lake District" (I have a 5th edition of 1876):
"The journey is one of the most charming and romantic in the Lake District, and must be travelled with pony or on foot." He also tells us that "About half way down the pass stands a small building, which has been erected by Mr Marshall of Patterdale Hall, as a luncheon-house for the accommodation of his visitors whilst climbing the mountains. Here a rivulet issues from the Ruthwaite Cove." He must be talking about Ruthwaite Lodge.
