From the fell itself, and indeed from higher up towards Skiddaw, Lonscale Fell just seems to be a big grassy area you pass on the way to or from somewhere else. It's only when the fell is viewed from a distance that you realise how wrong this is. Just about the best viewpoints for Lonscale Fell are Great Calva, the Cloven Stone area of Mungrisdale Common, Clough Head and also from Tewet Tarn. When you view Lonscale Fell from these places, you see the crags on the eastern side fell, and immediately you think 'yes', this is a fell that deserves to be climbed for it's own sake rather than an addition for a walk up Skiddaw.
While you here, don't forget to walk across to the splendid viewpoint found a short way to the north east. This would have made a much better summit had it been a little higher.
