Car park, Wasdale Head

Wasdale can boast possession of the highest mountain, the deepest lake and the smallest church. What I'd like to do is add the busiest car park onto this list. During the summer months this is an incredibly popular place, particularly in June when the three peak walkers are out in force.

Unbelievable I know, but parking is actually free. This tiny hamlet also has a hotel / pub, a shop, a camp site and all the facilities you expect to find with it.

Route Map

A beautiful afternoon at Wasdale Head as I set out on a walk up Great Gable.

Looking ahead to Burnthwaite Farm, Great Gable and Sty Head Pass.

A very steep start to the route up Great Gable.
The lowest point on the sky line is Beck Head.

And now looking back down towards Wasdale Head, Wast Water, Illgill Head and Yewbarrow.

Beck Head and a brief respite after the steep walk up Gavel Neese.
The path going into the rocky area is the route up Rib End and onto Kirk Fell.

I did say brief, , , after leaving Beck Head the you're faced with another steep climb up to Great Gable summit.

Another view taken from the route to the summit, this one looking down to Ennerdale Valley with the High Stile ridge and Haystacks running through the middle of the photo.
Crummock Water can be seen behind Haystacks summit.

The view from Great Gable summit.
Some of the fells to point out are:
The Skiddaw fells and Blencathra in the far distance, Hindscarth, Dale Head and High Spy in the middle of the picture.

A close up of the Langdales from Great Gable summit.

And a close up of Sprinkling Tarn from the same place.

Sty Head Tarn and the higher section of Sty Head Pass.

Another view to the top of Sty Head Pass, this one looking towards the Wasdale side of the pass.

Looking back up to Sty Head Pass from the bridge over Gable Beck.
