Roadside parking, Scales, Threlkeld

I'm sure anyone who has driven along this stretch of the A66 will have noticed the line of cars along both sides of the road. To hazard a guess, I'd say almost all of the occupants had headed out for a walk up Blencathra; and probably via Sharp Edge.

There is actually space for quite a few cars along here, but thoughtless parking often reduces the number of cars that can manage to get a spot. Parking is free, but it does fill up pretty fast, at all times of year.

Route Map

This old tractor on a field at Scales has definitely seen better days.

A passing shower between ourselves and Clough Head. Thankfully it was only the tail end of the shower that reached us and even that wasn't too bad at all.

Standing next to Scales Tarn. ready to walk the final section of path before reaching the start of Sharp Edge (top left).

Looking down to Scales Tarn.

Five photos looking back along / down Sharp Edge.

Blencathra summit and looking across to the Skiddaw fells.

It's a long way down to Threlkeld, seen here below the seemingly never ending Hall's Fell Ridge.

And from further down the ridge.

It's a good job the rocks were dry today!

A lovely view down to Threlkeld and into St John's in the Vale.

"At least my neck's nice and cool, even if the rest of me isn't".

Our route between Gategill and Threlkeld took us through some lovely countryside.

The going was easy now along the four mile stretch of the old Keswick railway running between Threlkeld and Keswick.

The River Greta.

A little further along we reached the point at which the path from Latrigg and Brundholme joins the railway path.
