Roadside, Cold Fell (Blakeley Moss)

Stretching six miles between Calder Bridge and Ennerdale Bridge, Cold Fell acts as a convenient shortcut across the western most section of the Lake District. There are lots of possible parking places across the Ennerdale half of the route; each one offering its own access onto the fantastically remote fells across this edge of the Lakes.

The wind was so strong while I was up here, but the strength of the wind wasn't the most outstanding factor, it was the temperature or should I say the lack of it. It was far colder on here today than it was earlier on in the week when I was in the snow and ice on Helvellyn.

Although I did enjoy the walk (as always) one disappointment was that despite the amount of blue sky, there was surprisingly little sunshine. Of course that changed at the end of the walk and for the rest of the afternoon. I think I started the walk an hour too soon.

Grike, seen across what is normally a very boggy area indeed. Today the ground was almost frozen solid which enabled me to made this short journey with dry feet.

Passing the weather station between Crag Fell and Grike.

The view back to Crag Fell.

I took a short detour to visit Blakeley Rise on the way back to the car and although this is only a minor hill that many people wouldn't think to be worth visiting, the small amount of effort needed reach the top is well worth it.

And then as I was heading down to the Cold Fell road the sun decided to come out.

Meadely Reservoir.
