Roadside parking near Portinscale suspension bridge

This is somewhere I tend to start walking from qutie a lot. It's nice and handy for Keswick, Borrowdale, Newlands Valley, Skiddaw, Latrigg and even the Castlerigg Stone Circle area.

The parking is free and no matter at what time of year or time of day I've always managed to get a space here.

From here you're only about 10 minutes walk from Keswick with everything the town has to offer, and in the opposite direction you're less than 5 minutes walk from Portinscale.

Route Map

A hazy view across towards Keswick. Clough Head and Great Dodd are visible but not quite the clearest I've ever seen them.

Looking in the opposite direction was a bit clearer even though the cloud was building up quite fast.

North western fells behind meadows and woodland.

The River Greta.

Keswick was pretty quiet when we set off this morning.

A view across to Cat Bells.

Springs Wood.

The blue sky had just about gone now and small patch of cloud had even dropped low enough to touch the top of Skiddaw.

Keswick and the Skiddaw fells seen from Walla Crag summit.

Derwent Water and the north western fells, also seen from Walla Crag summit.

Bleaberry Fell.

Heading across to Cat Gill. Here the path falls away steeply.

An easy enough route in the dry, but very slippery indeed after it's been raining.

Looking across Derwent Water to Cat Bells.

"There's hardly a breath of wind and looking at the sails won't make it go any faster. You'll need to use the propellor thing at the back."

Looking up to Walla Crag.

Looks like someone's pulled the plug out.

As I said earlier, it was quiet in Keswick when we left and to be honest it wasn't much busier when we got back.
