Roadside parking near Portinscale suspension bridge

This is somewhere I tend to start walking from qutie a lot. It's nice and handy for Keswick, Borrowdale, Newlands Valley, Skiddaw, Latrigg and even the Castlerigg Stone Circle area.

The parking is free and no matter at what time of year or time of day I've always managed to get a space here.

From here you're only about 10 minutes walk from Keswick with everything the town has to offer, and in the opposite direction you're less than 5 minutes walk from Portinscale.

Route Map

Plans were made for both days this weekend, then they were changed; partly because of the weather but in the end they didn't work out anyway. Yesterday we were rained off so we ended up looking around the shops in Keswick, the shops in Cockermouth and then going to Workington to buy some tropical fish on the way home. Today was forecast to be too windy for a sensible walk on the fells and again, it ended up being a wet day. "Lets just have a walk through Newlands Valley and see how far we get before the rain turns up".

Heading across the suspension bridge between the car and Portinscale.

Looking along the River Derwent to Latrigg; taken from the bridge.

Passing by Dorothy Well in Portinscale.

Swinside, Ullock and Barrow, seen from the footpath across the fields just outside Portinscale.

and now looking back towards Portinscale.

Apart from Dodd, there wasn't much to see of the Skiddaw fells today.

It just show how much better a lick of paint can make things look.

At Little Braithwaite Bridge.

Looking along the riverside footpath.

Over on the left hand side of the valley you can see Cat Bells. the building just above the centre of the picture Skelgill Farm; that's where we're heading.

The bridge over Newlands Beck. Our route took us straight ahead where as crossing the bridge takes you to Uzzicar Farm.

Cat Bells, seen from the road between Stair and Skelgill.

Thankfully there was a fence between the two of us.

Rowling End, Causey Pike (topped with cloud), Outerside and Barrow.

Skelgill Farm.

The rain had to turn up eventually and this is where we began to feel the first drops falling.

Walking through the woods on our way back to Portinscale.
