Roadside, The Hause (Little Mell Fell)

More often than not, The Hause is used as a point for quick access to Little Mell Fell. And although I've done this myself on many occasions, there are actually a decent selection of walk that could be done from here. There aren't many spaces, but you'll rarely have a problem getting parked here.

Route Map

The opportunity presented itself so I had a very short walk today. I was almost, sort of, more or less passing by here so I decided to nip across from the main road for a walk to Little Meldrum Tarn. It was just over 2 miles but a walk is a walk and after driving for most of the day and spending the rest of it in a meeting, the fresh air and cool wind was most welcome.

Blimey, I didn't expect any sunshine on this walk but I'm not complaining.

Looking back I see Great Mell Fell (left) and Little Mell Fell (right).

Far eastern fells seen beyond Ullswater.

Little Meldrum Tarn may be only be a short walk from the road but it's not the easiest tarn to get to the edge of. It's entirely surrounded by trees and most of them are so close together you reach the side of the tarn having been prickled, prodded and poked by the conifers; as I found out. The easiest way to access the tarn is from the woods on its eastern side. I discovered this as I walked around the waters edge trying to find a less painful route out then the one I'd taken to get in.

This was definitely worth the effort. Lots of places in the Lake District are described as being a 'hidden gem', and I reckon this has to be the best hidden of them all.

Rather than head back already, I took and off path route down to the Swinburn's Park path where I could walk across to the road between the car and Watermillock Church. It added a little bit of distance on and it's quite nice anyway.

Walking towards, but not as far as, Watermillock Church.
